Yesterdays' Omens

Yesterdays’ Omens is a serie of artwork combining the Buddhist flags used by Khmer people to decorate the pagodas, the practice of yantra and portraits of elders. Yantra are used to represent the astronomical position of the planets over a given date and time. It is considered auspicious in Khmer mythology. These yantras are made up on various objects i.e. Paper, Precious stones, Metal Plates and Fabrics. It is believed that constantly concentrating on the representation helps to build fortunes. To ensure its permanence, Khmer men have them tattooed on their body. They believe that no bullet can reach them, or that the marriage will be saved or the business will be prosperous if they have a yantra on them at all time. The need and desire of human for protection against unknown ill are common to all.

Mémoire des déracinées | Uprooted

These dyed and ink drawn canvas represent women from the Cambodian diaspora. They share memories of community from their homeland. The feeling of being uprooted brings back images of places that are not valued today. Many buildings are in danger of being torn down while others, already gone, only exist as memories for the uprooted. Women tend to be the ones that pass on a sense of Cambodian cultural heritage.

Incognito

The Incognito series presents Cambodian women under an attractive, rich and complex aspect - at the same time global and particularly local. The Khmer society is traditionally constraining, with a constant control of the young people. When they move around town or elsewhere, one pays attention to one's clothing to avoid getting tanned, Asian society praise a clear complexion. All the protection clothes create unrecognizable individuals. This anonymity gives a feeling of freedom in the city, contrary of the Muslim countries where women are masked by tradition. Incognito depicts the Asian woman differently than an exotic and submitted object.
